So sung a little Clod of Clay

Trodden with the cattle’s feet

But a Pebble of the brook

Warbled out these metres meet:

«Love seeketh only Self to please

To bind another to its delight

Joys in another’s loss of ease

And builds a hell in heaven’s despite.»

«Любов не шукає себе, щоб догодити

Ні про себе не турбується

Але для іншого дає свою легкість

І будує рай у пекельному розпачі».

Так заспівала маленька Clod of Clay

Топтаний ногами худоби

Але камінчик струмка

Вивів ці метри зустрічаються:

«Любов шукає лише себе, щоб догодити

Щоб прив’язати іншого до її радості

Радість від втрати чужою легкістю

І, незважаючи на це, будує пекло на небесах».
